A credit is an approximation of a typical turn in conversation with Memex, which includes both your message and Memex's response. The actual credit cost of each turn can vary above or below 1 credit, depending on the turn complexity and length.
Simple queries like "what's the time?" cost only a fraction of a credit. Complex or long messages may cost multiple credits.
You can keep track of your credit usage in the conversation screens, as well as on the billing page in the app.
Credits used per turn increases as the conversation progresses because each new message builds on the previous ones. While we employ techniques to minimize this effect, identical messages will generally cost more credits later in a conversation than at the start. We recommend starting a new conversation for each new topic or build you explore.
We have multiple features behind the scenes to minimize credit usage. On top of them, here are some best practices:
Give Memex precise instructions about what to focus on. It usually also helps to share with it if there is something specific you want to make sure it doesn't do.
When possible, start new conversations when focusing on a new feature or capability. Longer conversations tend to lead to higher credit usage.
Turn on so you can stop any potential unwanted code execution before it happens.
Leverage management to avoid potential long turn cycles.
Choose a size that matches your project needs
Your code is never stored anywhere other than your machine.
If you enable "Privacy mode", your conversations are also never stored anywhere other than your machine. Otherwise, we may collect usage and telemetry data (including prompts, code snippets, or app activities) to help improve Memex.
The Discover plan, our free offering, has a limited amount of credits a month.
The Build plan doesn't have a monthly limit. The monthly subscription includes 1,000 credits, and you can buy Credit Packs as needed.
If you run out of the credits included in the Build subscription, you can buy Credit Packs of different volumes.
We run offers from time to time where higher volume Packs have lower cost per credit.
Discover plan credits do not roll-over from month to month.
Build plan credits roll-over with the following structure:
Credits included in your subscription expire 3 months after they are acquired
Credits purchased from a Pack expire 3 months after the subscription renewal following the Pack purchase date.
You can see more details on your credit usage and expiration dates on the Usage page in Memex.
For example, let’s say your subscription renews on June 10th, and you buy a pack for 5,000 credits on June 25:
The 1,000 credits included in the subscription plan would expire on September 10th.
The 5,000 credits from the Pack expire October 10th (three months after the July 10th renewal)
When you cancel a subscription you’ll continue to have access to your credits and Build plan features until the end of your billing period.
Any unused credits by the time your subscription downgrades will expire. We recommend you use them before this date. If you are not sure you’ll be able to use your remaining credits in that time, we recommend you wait to cancel.
You can upgrade from Discover to Build whenever you need more credits or would like the Build plan features.
If you downgrade from Build to Discover, the change will take effect at the start of your next billing cycle.
Any unused credits by the time your subscription downgrades will expire. We recommend you use them before this date.
